The
album Fire in my Heart is about life experiences, melodies that constantly
pop into my head and words that somehow find their way into my music.
It’s also about expressing myself with my love for music. Although
I’ve been writing lyrics and playing guitar for years, somehow
life always seemed to get in the way of creating an album. But as I
wrote in the song, “Fire in my Heart,” “It’s just not livin’ if you waste what you’ve been given
‘cause of fear.”
It was time to get serious about
my music.
The first song I recorded was “Two Left Feet” when we were
still living in Los Angeles. A friend of mine, Bill Mooneyham, had generously
given me a four-hour recording session at Proving Ground Studios, which
is where I met Curt Piar, my recording engineer and bass player on my
album. That session marked the beginning of a three-year endeavor to
record my album.
I recorded five more songs before
I left L.A. One was about my father, Roy Cavette, who died of Alzheimer’s
disease. In lieu of a eulogy at his funeral, I sang “Livin’
Life so Long,” which was written two weeks before his death, it was
my way of expressing love, sorrow and grief for my dad.
I next wrote “Fire in my Heart,” which was the first song
Albert Lee played on. Years earlier I had seen him with John Hartford,
Don Everly and other musicians at gigs at the Sundance Saloon in Calabasas,
California. I met him one evening in Malibu. We talked about music and
mutual friends, and after telling him about my own recording ambitions,
he offered to play on my songs. What an honor! Albert plays lead guitar
and keyboard on six of my songs.
In June 2006 my wife, Marina,
and I moved to Natchez, Mississippi. What a life-changing experience!
The tranquility of living in the country surrounded by wildlife, lush
vegetation and warm, humid breezes energized my creativity. Although
the fury of hurricane Gustav in August 2008, was a departure from that
tranquility, it served as the genesis of “With the Rain.”
Now I spend my time in the deep south, enjoying life, writing songs
and--God willing--not living on the edge of my dreams (“Fire
in my Heart”).
